BEING STILL

God has never stopped speaking to you and me, not since the beginning of time. It is easy for us to miss His heart to have a personal relationship with us. Many times we are too distracted, busy, tired, or apathetic to pursue a relationship with Him that goes deeper than a Sunday morning service or a midweek gathering. He is not satisfied with being an afterthought or being considered a “spare tire”, nor would we be.

So what are we missing?

He has shown us His vision and creativity in speaking order to chaos. He gave us the gift of life by His own breath. He is generous in providing all that we need to not only survive but thrive. His words and works in creation grant us understanding by the senses that He has given to us to be able to experience Him and realize that He cares for us in ways that none of us would have thought to ask for, but couldn’t live without!

I love that in a constantly changing world, He doesn’t change. He is steadfast and consistent and isn’t tossed around by the winds of change. He cannot be deceived and will not lie, that brings stability and comfort to a war torn soul! He is: omniscient (all knowing and all seeing), omnipotent (unlimited power and authority), omnipresent, (present in all places at all times), sovereign (supreme political power and authority)! He corrects and disciplines us as a loving Father should. He is the One True Supreme God!

Recently it seems everything we have ever known or trusted on this side of heaven is being shaken, emotions are raw, and offense is rampant, God’s word offers a solution and some comfort and bids us to stop looking around and start looking up! We are reminded of this truth in Psalm 46:10:

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

If we have faith and begin to apply it, then we can have hope to come to the Father through Jesus Christ, the Author and Perfecter of it for our eternal security and peace of mind. We can begin by practicing, The Language of Worship

*Accept His gift of “today” and all it contains with humility and with gratitude

*Observe His works in creation with thanksgiving in our heart

*Experience His goodness by our senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, intellect, reason, and speech) and give Him thanks for them

*Read and study His love letter (word - the Holy Bibile) to us

*Trust and receive His instruction and correction

*Believe He is who He says He is and trust what His word says

*Sing songs of praise to Him

*Pray to Him for someone else

*Live your life to honor Him by obeying Him

This became real for me way back on December 29, 1975 when was I was 13 years old. I was on a winter youth retreat that my cousin Delores and her husband Jim had invited me and my brother to. It was a great place to make new friends, have some winter fun and be challenged through many different messages! After the gospel message was shared I had a lot of questions and Jim patiently answered every single one of them! He asked me if I wanted to pray to invite Jesus Christ to be my Savior and my Lord. I said, "YES" and mine was a life that was forever changed!

Jim recently moved to heaven having finished the race that God had marked out for him with his faith alive and active until his departure. I will be forever grateful for his faithfulness to share our Heavenly Father’s message and ministry of love and reconciliation with me and so many others!

On the morning of his celebration of life, as I was getting ready I was completely undone and couldn’t stop the tears. I went into my bedroom and sat down on the bench at the foot of our bed and was just still. I was blessed and comforted by this verse:

Psalm 46:10

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

I sat there with no words, no movement, just a deep unspoken gratitude that could only be expressed through the tears. God knew my heart and I didn’t need to say anything even during the service - He was there the whole time! The service was a beautiful and joyful reminder of the legacy of God the Father through the faithfulness of his children! He was truly exalted through Jim’s life!

It's good to know that even when we don't know how to express ourselves,

just being still before God is the best place for us to be found!

He and all that He is more than enough!
